  The Udmurt Republic

If you have a look at the map, you will see that Udmurtia - the land of thousand silver springs and sunny woods - is comfortably situated in the picturesque parts between the Kama and the Viatka rivers, in the heart of Russia.

Izhevsk is the capital of the Republic. Its biography has been dated from 1760, when according to a decree of a tsar an ironworks factory was laid on the Izh river.

At the beginning of the 19th century the mounting threat of Napoleon's France made the Russian Emperor Paul 1 take care of the construction of a new large arms factory. That was the beginning of the glorious history of the Izhevsk gunsmiths. In the memory of the first victories the conquered Napoleon's banners are for ever frozen in metal on the tower of the main arms factory building.

The Udmurt Republic is proud of its culture and achievements. This is the place, where the world-wide known Russian composer Pietr Chaikovsky was born and grew up, and the legendary small arms designer Mikhail Kalashnikov lives and works.

Unfortunately the region was closed for many years, but now its gates are opened wide, and the world may learn about our hospitable land with its rich traditions and splendid perspectives.

For those of you interested in the economy, Udmurtia is the republic with the well-developed oil industry, machine building, automobile and instrument making industries, wood-working, production of high quality steel, zirconium, communication systems, etc. Our products successfully compete at the local and world markets.

Experts in agriculture can learn about our progress in their field.

High scientific potential of the republic is maintained by five institutions of higher education, including the Udmurt State University, and scientific and research institutes.

Experts in culture and art will be keenly interested in the creative activity of our artists, composers, writers, professional and amateur ensembles, products by local craftsmen - weavers, carpet-makers, engravers.

Udmurtia is not the largest region of Russia. However, in this republic there are people who live and labor, love their land, work for its welfare and its future.
