Udmurt State UniversityThe system of education in the Udmurt Republic consists of 1958 institutions including 872 child care centers, 871 secondary schools, 34 special schools, 12 orphanages, 7 pedagogical colleges, 115 schools for additional training, 48 technical schools. 350 thousand people attend educational institutions; over 100 thousand children annually pursue additional training.

There are 5 institutions of higher education : the Udmurt State University, the Izhevsk State Technical University, the Izhevsk State Medical Academy, the Izhevsk State Agricultural Academy, the Glazovsky State Pedagogical Institute. These institutions train over 37 thousand students and offer more than 100 majors. There are 2.4 thousand instructors and professors, and over 1.1 thousand of them have scientific degrees. Besides, in Udmurtia there are 25 affiliates of the leading Russian Universities, academies, institutes, as well as non-state educational institutions. The largest non-state institution is the International Eastern-European University founded in 1994.

Recently, to provide training and consulting in the market economy, institutions of higher education have established self-supporting divisions, such as the School of business (at the Izhevsk State Technical University), the Academy of entrepreneurship and National center for juridical education (at the Udmurt State University), the Department of managers and accountants for agriculture (at the Izhevsk State Agricultural Academy).

Institutions of higher education enjoy broad international relations. They cooperate with the universities from Belarus, Great Britain, Hungary, Germany, Spain, China, Slovakia, USA, Finland, Czech Republic and other countries. The Udmurt State University takes part in the international programs TEMPUS/TACIS, INTAS, COPERNICUS. In 2000 the Izhevsk State Technical University established the Udmurt regional center for international cooperation and academic mobility.

To develop regional science, it was significant to set up the Udmurt Scientific Center of the Urals Department of the Russian academy of science in 1991, that included the Physical and Technical Institute, The Institute of applied mechanics, the Udmurt Institute of history, language and literature, the Udmurt Institute of regional economy. At the Center there are 3 Associate Members, 28 doctors and 111 candidates of science. Moreover, in the republic there is a number of scientific and research institutes and designing institutes.
